Rock and roll heroes - Graham Bonnet

This time I will feature one of the greatest rock and roll singers on the planet, Mr Graham Bonnet who has fronted bands like Rainbow, MSG, Alcatrazz and Impelliteri to name a few.
Bonnet is my favorite singer in Rainbow and the album "Down to earth" a true soundtrack in the summer of 1979 but what about MSG´s "Assault attack" or the first two Alcatrazz albums? It doesnt get more classic than this!

It was very hard to follow up the first two Alcatrazz albums without either Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai and the 1986 album "Dangerous games" didn´t exactly match the fans expectations but I think there are plenty of great music on this album. It deserves more attention than it gets. Truly a forgotten piece of work.

Bonnet has been involved in many solid albums with Impelliteri and Taz Taylor Band, not to mention his solo work. The song "Night games" from the 1981 album Line up is lovely!

Avoid!!!! Bonnet must have had a headache while recording the dreadful Blackthorne album from 1993, he did his worst vocal performance on "Afterlife" and the songs suck big time.

Rock and roll heroes - Queen

One of the Top 5 best selling bands in the world is Queen, they have changed their sound like a chameleon throughout the years but still the fans has stood by them through thick and thin.
Their music still lives on even though Freddie Mercury left us in 1991, my first record with the band was Sheer heart attack from 1974 and up to this day I remember how knocked out I was by the superb harmony vocals. What a great collection of albums you´re looking at here!

The 1995 album Made in Heaven was released after Mercury´s death and it featured the last songs recorded with Freddie Mercury plus leftovers from other albums and the rest of the album was recorded by the remaining members. With these facts, you could easily start to think that you can pass on this album but that is a mistake. There is lots of great music on here.

Four albums that might not be considered as Queen classics but still very good, and it´s real easy to make your own compilation of strong tracks from these ones. The show must go on baby!

What did they think of when they entered the studio to make the 1982 album Hot space? Queen is not a synthpop band, good thing they only did it once and returned to the more rocking sound on the next album. Good riddens!

Issa - Sign of angels

Frontiers Records are excited to present the world the talents of Norwegian singer Issa (Isabell Oversveen) with the release of her debut album “Sign Of Angels” on September 24 in Europe.

Sometimes real discoveries in music shake up the rock world from out of nowhere. In 2008 a new band from Sweden, called Work Of Art, took the melodic rock scene by storm with a stunning debut album. In the end of 2009, W.E.T. - another alliance between Swedish musicians with singer Jeff Scott Soto - was met with the highest enthusiasm from the melodic rock crowd, and just a few months ago, the return of Treat with “Coup De Grace”, marked another milestone release in the genre. Now, once again from Scandinavia, Issa, an exceptionally gifted singer from Norway takes her chance with “Sign Of Angels”, her debut album, an album that many of the ones “in the know” have defined as a “bomb”!

Helped by producer Ronny Milianowicz (Saint Deamon) and some killer musicians such as Peter Huss on guitar, Uli Kusch (ex-Masterplan, Helloween) on drums, Nobby Noberg on bass and Tim Larsson (Nick Lachey) on keyboards, Issa has managed to create a superb album which offers soaring and instantly likeable hooklines, solid guitar riffs and a crisp sound. Described as Brother Firetribe meets Treat with tons of melodies, class and attitude, “Sign Of Angels” features songwriting contributions from Joacim Cans (HammerFall), Thomas Vikström (Candlemass), Daniel Flores (TMOMS), Soren Kronkvist (Crash The System) and many more.

Rock and roll heroes - UFO

UFO has been around for 40 years where the Schenker era is the most classic one, the albums between 1974-1980 still gives me the goosebumps.
And his replacement Paul Chapman also was a part of a great record in "No place to run", it´s easy to get nostalgic when I think of this album because I saw UFO live in 1979. One of my first concerts ever as a 15 year old kid.

The 2nd time Schenker left the band, he was replaced by Vinnie Moore and these two albums from 2004 and 2006 are really good and a must in your UFO collection.

There are plenty of good solid hard rock albums from this band like the first two space rock albums from 1970-1971, the 80´s era from The wild, the willing, the innocent to Schenker´s return on Covenant (2000). Just another proof of that this band didn´t release any crap.

However, I am truly disappointed over the latest studio album The Visitor (2009) which is their weakest album so far. Much too bluesy and the lack of good songs makes this a mediocre album.

Rock and roll heroes - Petra

If you ask me, Petra is without doubt the best Christian rock band, period!
I saw them in concert on the Beyond Belief tour 1990 and they were awesome, all their albums from Not of this world (1983) to Unseen power (1991) are killer stuff. Whether it was Greg X Volz or John Schlitt who handled the mic, they rocked big time!
And here is a rare Petra track from 1992 produced by John Elefante called "I dont wanna fall away from you".
www.mediafire.com/?zg4c600h49fblzk

Even though Petra didnt do any original material on the worship album "Revival" from 2001, this album is just as good as their own classic stuff. A personal fave.

The first 4 albums between 1974-1982 are more progressive but quite good and the last Petra album "Jekyll and Hyde" showed the band in a more hardrocking way but its definitely worth listening to.

I never got into their alternative 90´s style where they took a step away from their classic melodic sound, sure there are a few nice songs on these albums but I never really cared that much for any of them.

Rock and roll heroes - Queensryche

Queensryche, masters of progressive metal with a groundbreaking sound when they debuted in the early 80´s, I was blown away by their revolutionairy hi-tech metal.
These albums between 1984-1990 shows the band at their peak, impressive!

Their latest album "American soldier" from 2009 is as close as the band gets to their classic albums, a real strong album that lifted the band up from the deep grave of the previous disaster Operation Mindcrime 2.

And to quote the classic rock magazine, here are a few albums that helped build and cement their reputation as a good prog metal band. Queensryche (1983), Promised land (1994), Hear in the now frontier (1997), Q2K (1999), Tribe (2003), Take cover (2007)

It should be a crime to release such a fiasco follow up like OM2 from 2008 when the first is a masterpiece and the 2nd one sounded like poor demos, what´s next? a new recording of the entire OM.......help me god.

Rock and roll heroes - E.L.O

As a 12 year old kid, I spent most of my days listening to Electric Light Orchestra´s "A new world record" and what a record it is. This band is truly the orchestral version of The Beatles where Jeff Lynne is up there in the same league as Lennon/McCartney with songs like "Telephone line", "Living thing", "Mr Blue Sky", "Turn to stone" and "Twilight" etc.
1975-1981 is the golden age of E.L.O!

The Orchestra without Jeff Lynne shouldn´t be anything worth checking out but it´s better than expected and even if it´s hardly recognized out there. I think "No rewind" from 2001 deserves more attention. Underrated and forgotten for sure.

There are several albums that any band would love to have their name on like the first 4 albums between 1971-1974 or Secret messages from 1983 and Balance of power from 1986, not to mention the first Electric Light Orchestra Part 2 album from 1990 which is in fact a solid album even though Lynne left the band.
No classics but very good albums.

The 2nd ELO part 2 album "Moment of truth" (1994) and Jeff Lynne´s E.L.O "Zoom" from 2001 are tiresome and far from the sound I grew up with. Avoid!
