We Are The Fallen - Tear the world down (2010)

We Are The Fallen is Evanescence without Amy Lee, or you could say Evanescence with an Amy Lee clone. Yes, Ben Moody wanted to recreate the sound of the million selling album "Fallen" from 2002 so he hooked up with American Idol contestant Carly Smithson and gives us the exact copy of "Fallen" but not with the same strong hits.
Carly has a perfect pitch but her voice is just as alive as a stone, the production on "Tear the world down" sounds expensive but the songs bore me to death.
Only "St.John" stand out with a cool chorus and the best track is a cover ofcourse, Madonna´s "Like a prayer".
This album misses the most important part of Evanescence´s "Fallen", namely co-writer David Hodges (Trading Yesterday) so Amy Lee is not the only one pissed off over this crap. Me too!

H.E.A.T - Freedom rock (2010)

H.E.A.T´s popularity has grown stronger, not only in Sweden but also in the rest of Europe and Japan. Their 2008 debut was a well needed injection in the AOR genre so expectations are high on their follow up "Freedom rock" that will be out in May.
The new album is less ToTo sounding and more of a Rainbow/Deep Purple-AOR album, these new songs also bring thoughts to another Swedish AOR band - Grand Illusion.
It´s a good album where the fans won´t be disappointed, especially the harmony vocals are top notch but most songs are predictable so this album doesnt move the way I hoped.

April Divine - Redemption (2010)

The Swedish modern rock sensation April Divine goes from strength to strength, if their well crafted debut "Chapter one" from 2007 didnt convince you - their new album "Redemption" will. This 11 track album is released on May 19 and features a great cover of Seal´s "Kiss from a rose" as well as the melodic single "Redemption".
The band recorded the major part in USA with producer Rick Beato (Shinedown, Submersed) and then went back to Sweden to add 3 more tracks with producer Tobias Lindell (Europe, Mustasch).
Highlights : No.1, Faced down, 3 drops
Now let´s hope some of the leftovers from the Rick Beato sessions will end up as bonus tracks because "Beautiful" and "2 to 1" are too good to be left unheard.

Supe - The List EP (2010)

The Japanese modern rock/metal band Supe impressed me with their debut EP "Grow in the cold" in 2006 and then followed up with the strong full length album "2nd place to none" in 2008.
Last year they released their second EP "The black" and recently Supe gave us their latest EP "The list", they still deliver tough modern rock with traces of aggressive metal.
Songs like "Where I stand", "Addicted this apathy" and "(N)ever say never" are very good but there are also a few weak tracks on the EP so its not their best release but still good.

JANE BOGAERT - 5th Dimension out on Yesterrock in May

Right after her first piano lesson at the age of 10 years, Jane Bogaert wrote into her school satchel: “Music is my life”. And until today, music is still the most important thing to her. The former Miss Switzerland actually now has really reached another dimension with the new album “Fifth Dimension”.

This was already obvious whilst being educated at the conservatoire in Biel and the school of musicals in Munich where she took singing lessons. Her voice has matured during a couple of first tries as a solo singer and back-up jobs for A-Ha, Thin Lizzy, Al Jarreau, David Hasselhoff, Toto Cutugno, Claudia Jung, Roland Kaiser or Uwe Ochsenknecht. As a result, she later worked for Al Bano & Romina Power and as a result, in the end took over Romina’s parts completely.

At the change of the millennium, Jane represented Switzerland at the Eurosong Festival in Stockholm, worked as singer and dancer with DJ Bobo and as a lecturer for ‘pop vocal performances’ at the University of Arts in Berne, Switzerland.

Even more inspired and infected, Jane together with Robert Papst (Dominoe) and Guenther Skitschak (Dominoe) wrote the songs for “Fifth Dimension” and engaged a couple of guests such as Jeff Scott Soto (W.E.T., Journey, Talisman, Malmsteen), Joe Lynn Turner (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Hughes-Turner Project), John „Rhino“ Edwards (Status Quo), Matt Beck (Rod Stewart) and Charlie Morgan (Elton John) to help her with the realization of the record.

These well known names and the great production job by Robert Papst helped Jane a lot to get herself in top form as well. The result is a record with obvious roots coming from the 80’s Rock music, which nevertheless creates an immense closeness, intensity and tension force – an album without deadlocked facets and shades.

Release date: May 21st

Marion Crane - Kamikaze (2010)

Florida is the home for many new promising rock/metal acts and Marion Crane is one of them.
Their debut album "Kamikaze" is well produced and filled with energetic modern hard rock, I like the tight rhythm section and the fat wall of guitars.
14 tracks might be a little overkill but there are no fillers here like I thought, impressive work and a must for fans of Burn Season, Fuel and Signs of Betrayal.

Pornology - My bitter end (2010)

There are two things about Italian rock band Pornology that gets me confused, what do they wanna sound like? Who came up with the terrible band name?
First of all, they should consider changing their name to something else, anything else is better.
And secondly, their sound has traces of 80´s rock, grunge, alternative rock, funk, modern rock...you name it. It´s not wrong to be influenced by several genres but work something out that makes sense. "My bitter end" do not make sense.
The song "A star" is good but the rest bores me to death.

Lounge Pistol - Lounge Pistol (2010)

Canada based Lounge Pistol is a solo project led by Travis Pankiw, the sound can be described as a mix between grunge, 70´s hard rock and acoustic driven roots rock somewhere between Pearl Jam, The Answer and Staind.
There are some good songs on the album but the drum production is a bit weak, the first half is better than the second half but fans of bands like Red Wanting Blue might wanna check it out.
Not bad at all.

Soundwise, the new band Autumn Burn comes from the same neighborhood as Chevelle, Evans Blue and 10 Years. This band got potential for sure, the production is great and their debut album "Ashes of a tormented soul" is solid and a well worth investment for fans of alternative modern rock/metal.

No Second Troy - Colors (2010)

I love this band, I couldnt get enough of their previous studio album "Narcotic" (2006) and thought it was about time they released something new since we only got the live album "Live at the 930 club" last year.
The new track "The argonaut" from the live album is also featured here in a studio version and it´s brilliant but what do you say about magic stuff like "Surfacing" and "Grounded". It can´t get much more intelligent than this, No Second Troy is the perfect mix of Collective Soul´s modern rock and Blue October´s thinking rock.
"Colors" enters my best of album list with a bang!

The American Plague - Kiss of death EP (2009)

The American Plague is a trio from Knoxville, USA that feels like a fresh injection of straight ahead rocknroll in the 70´s style compared to the jungle of modern rock these times.
Their latest EP "Kiss of death" is good clean fun rock like a mix between Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss and AC DC - I just cannot say no to this since I´m such a huge fan of Kiss.
Not all 6 songs are great but the major part gets my motor running.

Melbourne based alternative metal band Shift´s debut 6 track EP "Faceless" is very heavy and strongly influenced by 90´s numetal, the riffs are truly the highlight here while the vocal performance is the weak link of the EP.
The opening track "This brutal embrace" is by far the best track and the band never reaches the same heights on the following 5 tracks.

Sleeping with sirens - With ears to see and eyes to hear (2010)

Woah, this was a short album with only 33 minutes running time but I played it all day at work and think Sleeping with sirens has a great sound.
Razorsharp guitars, high pitch vocals and energetic post hardcore with more clean vocals than screamo.

Vandenplas to release new album in June

A good four years after Vanden Plas last critically acclaimed studio recording, “Christ O” hit the charts, Germany’s finest Prog Metal act is set to release its brand new album: “The Seraphic Clockwork”, on June 4th, in Europe and June 22nd in the USA.

Highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, “The Seraphic Clockwork” is a fascinating concept album, which not only shows the quintet’s exceptional technical skills, but also highlights their impressive development as songwriters. The new album sounds more multi-layered, progressive and metal-oriented than any previous Vanden Plas release. “I think that my penchant for music of the tougher persuasion shines through more than ever before on this album,” comments guitarist Stephan Lill, who – together with keyboardist Günter Werno and vocalist Andy Kuntz – make up the group’s creative triumvirate. He adds: “Hard riffs, elaborate keyboard and orchestral arrangements plus catchy hooklines come together in a perfect symbiosis which marks Vanden Plas’ own style. I feel that we were much more adventurous on with The Seraphic Clockwork than ever before.”

The Color Turning - Good hands bad blood (2009)

Los Angeles based The Color Turning mix alternative rock with experimental 70´s rock, a bit like Radiohead on a picnic with Death cab for cutie.
Their latest album "Good hands bad blood" has a few great moments but feels like its a bit too long, I lose interest after a while.

Palace of Rock Album Feature : Neon Trees - Habits (2010)

Like their name, Neon Trees are a combination of slick pop hooks and sturdy organic rock, both melodic and hard-hitting, their anthems of adolescent angst, longing, love lost and found, delivered with the kind of heart-on-the-sleeve passion that only comes from hard work and commitment.
Their Mercury Records debut, Habits, produced by friend, singer/guitarist Tim Pagnotta, is a refreshing blast of timeless rock energy and spirit that wouldn’t sound out of place at any point from ‘60s garage-rock to 2010 dance rock, with the first single, “Animal,” taking off from a round of weaving, angular guitars into a song equally at home in the arena as on the dance floor, a paean to sexual longing in which singer/front man Tyler Glenn wails, “Take a bite of my heart tonight.,” and you have no reason to doubt his sincerity.

Justin Nozuka might not necessarily need a good song to song on it, he makes it good with his wonderful voice. But most songs on "You I Wind Land and Sea" are pretty good so we can leave that question out of this review.
Toronto based Nozuka deliver soulful pop in the same vein as Terence Trent D´arby and Seal, the album is quite laid back but its filled with passion and love.

We´re talking sunny pop here that will get you in a good relaxing mood, Dave is living in Nashville which is obvious when you hear the country influenced tracks but this is not a country album. Palace of Rock Album Feature : Evan Bliss - ShhhPOW! (2010)

Evan Bliss is one singer-songwriter to watch. His voice, combining the effortless soul of Maroon 5's Adam Levine with the smoky blues undertones of
Ray LaMontagne, makes his alt/rock/pop sound unmistakable.
Ubiquitous despite not yet being a household name, Evan's music has been featured in commercials for surf-inspired footwear maker Reef, and he has performed in
support of artists as diverse as O.A.R., Wyclef Jean, and the Flaming Lips.
Evan is building on the groundswell of popularity he enjoyed with his former band, well-respected East Coast reggae rockers 'The Low Life'. Needless to say, you will be hearing much more from him with the new release ShhhPOW!, out this Spring on the philanthropic indie label Holster Records.

The new album 'ShhhPOW!' seamlessly blends music genres, showcasing Evan's own distinct "international rock buffet" brand. Evan writes honest yet introspective lyrics that range from the personal to the abstract. Stand out tracks include "Fleiss", a contemporary power ballad that meditates on damaging relationships. In stark contrast, "Captain Collins Navigates from Star to Star" starts like an homage to 70s Bowie-esque space odysseys and finishes with a nod to the anthemic quality of early U2.
Uptempo rocker "The Last Ride" introduces itself to the audience with a honky tonk guitar flourish before segueing into Muse-style crescendos. The track "Awake",
which should be familiar to long-time fans, began life as a live instrumental end jam that Evan fleshed out into a full-length song using "The Voyage of Life" by renowned painter Thomas Cole as his lyrical muse.

The British grunge band (sub)Nova is heavily influenced by Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, their debut "Souvenir" has a few good moments like the soft "Kerosene girl", the great rocker "Black soul monday" and I also like the riff in "Runaway" but most of the times - this album gets too monotone.
