Happy New Pink Year!

Alright, I must recommend the new Pink DVD "Funhouse tour, Live in Australia" because it was sooo good.
Pink is a great artist, she´s a wonderful performer and a fab singer. I was surprised to hear that her songs rocked so hard on stage. And to prove she was born a rocker, she pulls off fantastic versions of Led Zeppelin´s "Baby I´m gonna leave you" and Queen´s "Bohemian rhapsody" but also a superb live show with acrobatic numbers from Pink herself.
Highlights of her own songs are "Just like a pill", "Sober", "Glitter in the air", "Get the party started" and "So what".
Check it out folks!
See you in 2010 with reviews of Gungor, Tally Hall and downloads of new songs from Foxy Shazam and The Giant Leap.

Searchlight - Until the end and after (2009)

Searchlight´s song "Contagious" was featured on the Resident Evil : Extinction Soundtrack from 2007 and it´s also included on their new album "Until the end and after".
This Las Vegas based rock band has traces of both emo, alternative rock and pop punk in their sound. Imagine a mix between The Revolution Smile, Saves the day and Recover - yeah something like that.
The production is a bit light, I wish the album would´ve sounded a bit bigger.
Still some good songs but I could´ve settled with an EP of these songs instead.

Virgin Millionaires - Facedown (2009)

I´m a sucker for powerpop and especially when it sounds like Virgin Millionaires, this Indianapolis based band released their debut in 2006 and this year they followed up with the new full length "Facedown" and if someone told me, Michael Morales was their lead singer - I would believe him.
They´ve got an irresistable sound of Rick Springfield/Michael Morales-like powerpop where the whole album breathes 80´s rock!
Oh mama!

This World Fair - White flag EP (2009)

Now this came as a surprise that This World Fair has a new EP out! Well, new isn´t really the truth here since these songs were recorded at the same time as their 2007 album.
But do not think these 5 songs on "White flag" are leftovers or something like that because we´re talking classy modern rock/pop where all songs truly could´ve been featured on their amazing debut album.
I also think these "new" songs rock more than their previous album, not that I am complaining or anything....hahahahaha.
This is love! I can listen to the song "Plastic soul" over and over again.
So skip listening to The Fray next time you want a dose of this type of music, TWF is better!

Love.45 - Into the ether EP (2009)

Woah, it wasn´t yesterday I heard about Love.45 but they´re back with the new 7 track EP "Into the ether" and they still sound like Harem Scarem going modern rock.
Lovely!
Their self titled debut album from 2005 is a real gem in this genre and I still think some of these songs sound like they could´ve been written by Harry Hess or Brian Howes of Closure.
Who says no to AOR-ish modern rock?! Not me.

A Current Affair - The Real Devastation EP (2009)

California based A Current Affair released their debut EP "Life in an hourglass" in 2007 and now follow up with the 5 track EP "The real devastation", it doesn´t happen too often these days that you get to read about new emo releases since the genre is dying out.
But A Current Affair deliver a harder kind of emo with a sound somewhere between Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy, this band is pretty good and the songs feel very fresh.
If you asked the band, I´m quite sure that they don´t call their music emo at all.
I like this!

i:Scintilla - Prey on you EP (2009)

i:Scintilla´s follow up to their full length "Optics" is an EP with 3 new songs and several remixes.
This female fronted band still focus on techno based gothrock and the result is good, you can both dance and headbang to the music which is cool.
While the opener "Prey on you" features a great melody, the 2nd "Ammunition" rocks harder and the closing track "Hollowed" sounds like a collaboration between Rammstein and Depeche Mode.
At times, they remind a bit of a more melodic Prodigy.

Everio - Outlaw Savior (2009)

Need a shot of riff oriented modern rock? Then Everio might be the right cure for the day!
Their new album "Outlaw savior" might not be anything revolutionairy but if you´re a fan of let´s say, Breaking Benjamin....you should really pay attention and visit their myspace.
The band is competent and the sound is big and heavy, just what the doctor ordered.

This Time Next Year - Road maps and heart attacks (2009)

This Time Next Year´s debut full length "Road maps and heart attacks" is produced by Brian McTernan which is the reason why I listened to this album but the pop punk affair TTNY deliver will only please die hard fans of New Found Glory that hunger for light pop punk in the same way Britney fans scream every time they see a new photo of her.
I won´t listen to this again but I´m in happy new year´s mood today and is rather kind with 2 stars.

Gun - Popkiller EP (2009)

Remember the Scottish rock band Gun? They debuted in 1989 with "Taking on the world" and was most successful with "Swagger" from 1994 with the hit "Word up!".
The band split up in 1997 but reformed in 2008 with Toby Jepson of Little Angels replacing frontman Mark Rankin, their new EP "Popkiller" is the first album in over a decade from this cool band.
There are moments when I think of their sound on "Popkiller" as a more rocking Simple Minds, and since I´m a fan of Little Angels - I get to enjoy this EP a bit more.
"Seraphina" is perfect for the mixtape.

Danyew - Wake up EP (2009)

"Wake up" is the 2nd EP from Danyew in 2009, the first self titled EP contains 6 songs when this new one only features 3 new tracks and that is a pity since it´s such a quality work.
Beautifully arranged songs with amazing vocals from Danyew, if you put together these 2 EP´s you´re gonna get an awesome album for sure.
The title track is awesome but my favorite is "Twilight", woohooo...it´s so good.

Woodale - Don´t say it too late EP (2009)

Florida based modern rock/pop band Woodale released their debut EP "Finish what you start" in 2008 and got a minor hit with the song "Keep driving".
The band features Tom Blair on bass (formerly with Copeland), Adam Pruitt of Gilded Age on guitar, Ryan Bates on drums and Matt Wilber on vocals/guitar.
Their sound lies somewhere between The Fray and Jacks Mannequin, you can also add a touch of Copeland into the music and you´ll get Woodale.
Their new 5 track EP "Don´t say it too late" is really strong where the first two "Where we began" and "Carry on" are the best tracks, very close to 4 stars.

See The World - Broken cities EP (2009)

See The World is a piano pop/rock trio from Minneapolis, their debut ep "Broken cities" bring thoughts to Keane, Augustana and Death Cab For Cutie.
I think it´s a nice 6 track EP but would´ve loved to hear more songs like the opener "Broken cities" that is a highlight here, the music is sunny, laid back and well performed.
Perhaps a little too soft, they rock a bit in the chorus of "Haunted" where I lift my eyebrows so that´s good.

The Murder of My Sweet - Divanity (2010)

The Murder of My Sweet - Divanity
Release Jan 29, 2010
Track by track comment
1.No evil
An awesome opener, what a great rhythmic song this is with a melodic chorus that grows each time I hear it.
2.Follow the rain
A clear hit single, I love the Rammstein-like riffs and the orchestral parts are super.
3.Bleed me dry
The first single is a winner, a great ambassadeur for the album and brilliant vocals from Angelica Rylin.
4.Chemical attraction
One of the first songs I heard as a demo, sounds so much better in this mastered studio version. Lovely keyboard work.
5.Kiss of death
Another bombastic and epic metal track perfect as a single, this is so The Murder of My Sweet!!!
6.One bullet
A magnificent rocker with horror music vibes, a song that will do just fine to open their shows with.
7.Tonight
A typical album track, not bad at all but it doesnt match the rest of the album. Flores production lifts the song though.
8.Storms at the sea
A powerful and anthemic ballad, symphonic metal at its best so to speak. You can almost feel the cold and big ocean waves on a dark day in November.
9.Destiny
Film noir metal is a great description for this band´s sound and this song couldn´t be more suitable for this new genre, the resurrection of Greta Garbo.
10.Revolution
One of my favorite tracks, it´s heavy and pompous and the production deserves an award of any kind.
11.Valerie
I would love to see a video to this 80´s sounding chorus, a catchy melody that won´t leave your head for weeks.
12.Death of a movie star
A modern Bohemian Rhapsody and the best track of the album, a masterpiece written in stone.
What you do, don´t compare this band with Epica, Nightwish or Within Temptation. TMOMS do not sound anything at all like them!

RRRRR FANTASTIC!

Mad Machinery - Reconnecting (2004)

Mad Machinery is a cool band from New York with a unique sound, their only released album "Reconnecting" has traces of different genres like grunge, 70´s prog and alternative metal.
You could say they sound like a mix between Stone Temple Pilots, Pink Floyd and A Perfect Circle. Not so much Pink Floyd as lets say A Perfect Circle but the musicianship is awesome.

Burning Tree Project - Time and color EP (2009)

The California based 6 piece Burning Tree Project are great songmakers, I love their edgy modern emo rock style that sounds like it should be homebase for any major label and still they´re unsigned? God works in mysterious ways!

Death on two wheels - The past and the present EP (2008)

Do you fancy 70´s rock in the same vein as The Rolling Stones and The Black Crowes? Then Death on two wheels might be your cup of tea, the 3 track EP "The past and the present" was released before the full length "The seperation of church and fate" so all 3 songs are featured on the 2009 album.
"Calling us back home" is the best track out of these 3, "Shaking like a leaf" is ok but "Better way" is too retro and I will gladly skip it every other time I will listen to this EP.

You can also throw in a touch of Saosin into the mix and you´re gonna get Chasing Thrill.

Animasola

Animasola are really really influenced by the 80s stadium rock schtick. The band is influenced heavily in awe of early U2 and Simple Minds. However, this isn't such a bad thing as the Animasola do a very convincing job of breathing fresh life into the genre alongside such contemporaries as fellow Scandinavians Mew. Now all they need is a video laden with crashing waves on a rain sodden day and they're sorted in terms of sending up the genre.

The riffs are downtuned but the music have a positive sound so you don't come in a sad mood all the time you listen...There isn't that much postgrunge releases nowadays so grab the opportunity to listen to this great record. I never get tired of hearing the T-Ride album from 1992 that he played on and I also loved the pop band Stimulator which he did one album with in 2004.
In 2008, Geoff released his first solo album "Slow mad descent" and 2 songs from that album are featured on the new self titled EP, they are "Polyrhythms" and "Riverbleue" that both are fusion-like rockers with a laid back feel.
You can certainly hear that Geoff is influenced by David Gilmour, the new track "You don´t know" is the lead track of the EP with a video made to it and this one is more rootsy in a singer/songwriter way.
Good song that grows but the highlight is "100 million motherfuckers" which is the heaviest track of the EP, we can´t get closer to T-Ride than this today.
