101 South - No U turn (2009)

Roger Scott Craig is back with a new 101 South album called "No U turn", I think you could call it cruisin AOR because the music is laid back and cool. This is a solid album with no standout tracks but I like all 10 tracks so it´s quite enjoyable.
The album will be released in late November.

Sirens Sister - Unspeakable Things (2009)

This is the second album from this great band! With former members from Vendetta Red they continue to deliver classy alternative modern rock. The songs are super charming and the song arrangements are always smart which make you interested all the way through the album. When you listen to the title track you get huge vibes from the group 3. How cool isn't that? This group deserves to have great success in the future. I love the tracks "Sparks" and "The Sea Of Claws".

Black Lab - Give Us Sugar (2009)

The new album from Black Lab is a double album with 32 tracks. I get mixed feelings when I listen to this really long album. It is amazing that the group have so much unreleased material but of course the quality is a bit up down along the way. The good stuff dominate though so you easily can say that you get enough for the money. It is hard to pick out favourite songs because there are songs for different moods, but songs like "Free" and "Black Eye" are definitely worth mentioning.

Let´s Get It - Digital Spaces EP (2009)

A successful formula for a winning sound today is a mix of electro pop and pop punk, and in the case with Let´s Get It, they also added a touch of orchestral pop into their infectious sound.
Their debut EP "Digital spaces" is released on Fearless Records and I can´t get enough of hearing these keyboard layered songs, imagine Fall Out Boy hanging out with Elliot Minor while playing songs by Forever The Sickest Kids.
Yeah they´re that good! My fave tracks are "Duck, duck, grey goose" and the bombastic "To catch a snipe".

Linden - The future is EP (2008)

It´s hardly new that I dig these female fronted pop/rock acts, the two sisters Kara and Casi Carlson is joined by guitarist Steven Keller in their band Linden. The 6 track EP "The future is" is produced by Jordan Schmidt who is also producing their forthcoming full length debut.
It´s a well performed EP that bring thoughts to Meg and Dia plus Aly and Aj, I think you can add a touch of Fleetwood Mac and Taylor Swift into the music as well.

This rare EP from 2005 features the songs "Puppet", "Solo crucifixation", "Whole" and "You are".

Grinspoon - Six to midnight (2009)

Aussie rockers Grinspoon´s 6th album "Six to midnight" is their weakest effort so far, several songs are non-melodic and almost punk-ish. I think the single "Comeback" and "Give you more" are 2 really good songs but the rest.......nah!
There are too many songs that sounds like leftovers from the previous album, I know they can do a lot better because I really like this band.
The garage rock of "Tonight" is crappy, I don´t wanna go as low as a 1 star rating but it was close.

Army of Me - Make yourself naked EP (2009)

At last a new release from Army of Me, the band named after a song by Björk. Their new EP "Make yourself naked" is the follow up to the 2007 album "Citizen".
This EP contains 5 brand new songs performed acoustic but don´t let that scare you away because the songs are really good and I´m impressed over the passionate performance.
Talk about classic songwriting, a highly recommendable EP that will be released on Oct 27.

Population Game - Wake me up Let me down (2009)

If Population Game was more Queen influenced on their first album, they´re definitely more Stevie Wonder groovy on their new album "Wake me up Let me down".
I think the band sound more mature and the new album is more even compared to their debut.
This is the result if you put in ToTo, Maroon 5 and Stevie Wonder in a big blender and out comes Population Game.
There are some major groovy tracks on this album, real close to a 4 star rating.

Deaf Havana - Meet me halfway, at least (2009)

Deaf Havana is one of the most promising and exciting post hardcore bands to come out of U.K.
Their new album "Meet me halfway, at least" contains just about everything you want in a post hardcore album from razorblade riffs to huge melodic choruses and screamo to a tight rhythm section.
They should be just as famous as Funeral For A Friend and you know what? Deaf Havana is stronger and better so what are you waiting for? Check em out.

The first release in 6 years from modern rock band Lo-Pro, this time it´s an independent EP.
"Letting go" contains 5 new tracks where their fans will recognize a couple of tracks as demos posted on their myspace earlier.
This EP is not that different from their 2003 album, the sound is huge and there are times when I think of them as a mix between Trust Company and Filter but where are the guitars?
They´re too low in the mix, I wish it was a bit heavier.

The Storm - Black luck (2009)

The Danish female fronted electro modern rock band The Storm released their debut "Where the storm meets the ground" in 2008 and now follow up with the uberstrong "Black luck" which is much heavier than the debut.
This is what you get if you take 33% The Bangles, 33% Carpark North and the rest with 30 Seconds To Mars. The first track "Wall of shame" even bring thoughts to Courtney Love and Hole.
The single "Are your shoes too tight?" is not the best track here even though it´s super, the 2nd track "Honesty" is a killer........god damn!
It´s cool to hear Volbeat singer Michael Paulsen guesting on the rocker "B.S.E".

W.E.T (2009)

It does not happen too often these days that my body gets warm from a new AOR album but the debut from W.E.T is absolutely stunning!
This band features members from Work of Art, Eclipse and Talisman - yes it´s the amazing singer Jeff Scott Soto that handles the mic here.
What we get is first class melodic hard rock/AOR and the album never falls, it is strong to the very last track and that track is one of my favorites also, "If I fall" could in fact have been a lost Journey song.

Fun is a suitable name for this trio, with members from The Format, Steel Train and Anathallo. The band Fun makes fun music indeed, like The Beatles hanging out with Sparks or B52´s on a collision course with Queen.

Paige Armstrong - Wake up (2009)

Another talented young girl that is anything but a polished pop star that she might look like. Paige Armstrong´s debut album "Wake up" is a heavy rock affair, the riffs stand in line to run you over and I get amazed over songs like "I say" and the killer opener "Episode".
This album is a safe buy if you love bands like Flyleaf, Fireflight and Paramore even though Paige rock much harder.

Silverline - Start To Believe EP (2009)

This is really a great ep! They deliver high energy songs in the emo rock genre but they also put in modern rock ínto their emo rock which make their music very nice and alive. Three Star Seed - Paleo Pornstar EP (2009)

I find it hard to describe the music style that the Canadian group Three Star Seed plays. It is definately modern rock but perhaps with a touch of grunge? The band's singer is great but he hasn't the typical modern rock voice. Perhaps that's why he feels so fresh. I love the first track "I'm On Fire" and I won't be surprised if that song leads to a breakthrough for the band.

Skindred - Shark Bites And Dog Fights (2009)

Skindred always delivers groovy reggae rock metal. This record is no exception and it is so hard to sit still when you listen to this kind of music. The first track "Stand For Something" is one of their best songs to date and when I hear a mega cool and heavy cover of Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue" there is no limit for how much I love this group. One question though...why only 8 tracks?? A very strong 3 rating.
RRRRR

Day Minus 7 - Day Minus 7 EP (2009)

It is easy to compare a group with Nickelback if they play tough modern rock. This is almost true for Day Minus 7, but they do their thing with class and who can complain when they deliver 4 great tracks? I know I can't! The opening track "Hate You" have muscles, power and great feeling. A super strong ep.

Sunna - Two Minute Terror (2009)

Nine long years since their debut album. Now with the sophomore album they have spoiled every good feelings from the first album. I wonder what they will say with the music on the new album. It is slow, dark, real sad music and very often also quite unmelodic. It is almost a pain to get through the album and that can't be the purpose of a record, or?? With sadness in my heart I have to give this record the lowest grade.

A Sound Mind - Harmonia (2009)

Originally released back in 2007, the Aussie band A Sound Mind now re-release their debut album "Harmonia" in autumn 2009. The sound on the album can be described like progressive, anthemic and sometimes real heavy poprock. I have completely fallen for their first single "Grace" which is close to perfection, the question is if it is one of the best songs of 2009 (2007....). They have a super singer in Anthony Kupinic and the piano pieces in the music make the music so alive. Usually this type of music is perhaps not my cup of tea but I really love this record.
RRRRR

The Used - Artwork (2009)

I have tried to make my good friend Kaj listen to this record but so far with no success. The Used have always been up there as a top band in emo rock. In my opinon they now have taken the last step up to world class. This record is nothing but a masterpiece. Definately their best work to date and I don't have any problem to give them the highest grade there is. There are 11 top songs on the record and they can pick any song as a single. Amazing is the word!!
RRRRR

Sighlo - Shattered Pieces (2009)

Here is a record for all numetal lovers out there. I was really astonished over the high quality when I listened to this record. On their third album Sighlo delivers classy numetal with angry screamo in combination with clean vocals, right by the book. The riffs are edgy and the song quality is great all over. All 10 songs is around 3 minutes long which make the record very accessible. Favourite songs on the record is "Shattered Pieces" and "My Masterpiece". Very close to a 4 rating.
RRRRR

New Device - Takin' Over (2009)

The debut album from this British band delivers straight rock'n'roll which is perfect when you're hangin' in a bar with a beer in your hand. The music is hardly groundbreaking but if I compare this group with others in the same genre I can easily recommend them. They sound hungry and have enough energy to lighten up my day at once. The opening track "Make My Day" is brilliant and "You've Got It Comin'" takes you back to the 80's right away. It feels like I am 15 years old again when I listen to this record. Nice indeed.
RRRRR

Negative 263 - Autumn Winters (2009)

I have always been a sucker for numetal and that's why this record makes my heart pound real hard and fast. This record sounds like the numetal haydays back in 2001. The band delivers classical numetal stuff with huge riffs and super strong songs. OK, the album doesn't start that excellent but already with the second track "Killing Me" they show what they can do. The standout tracks on the album are "Maniac" and "Believe" and I can play those tracks again and again without getting tired. Seldom we here this classy numetal nowadays so at least I am very happy with this release.

Sybreed - The Pulse Of Awakening (2009)

This Swiss monster group gets bigger and bigger with every record released. On their new record they feel like a bulldozer which rolls out monster riffs and electronic dark atmospheres. They call their music style death-wave metal which certainly is a great description. I can't get enough of this kind of tough and dark riffomania and songs like "A.E.O.N.", "Doomsday Party" and "Human Black Box" are killer tracks that hopefully will make this group big all over the world. They so deserve it!!

The Loving Loss - You Could Kill EP (2007)

A bit dark, progressive and gothic modern rock is what we get on the great ep with The Loving Loss. The opening of the ep is great but the closening is close to perfection. They have great song arrangements, they mix screamo and clean vocals and have nice riffs. All songs are good but I have to mention the splendid closing song "Coming Home". This track have everything, so much emotion and what about the chorus?! Take a listen and you know what I mean.

Hellyeah - Hellyeah (2007)

Hellyeah is a "supergroup" with members from Mudvayne, Nothingface and Damageplan/Pantera. The sound can easily be described like a mix of these groups. But I also want to put in some Systematic ingredients. It is more like the numetallers Systematic doing a thrash record. The songs are quite melodic so I don't mind about the thrash sound. A few highlights can be found on the record, the title track, "You Wouldn't Know" and "Thank You". A bit tiresome in the end though.
RRRRR

Slant - Slant (2009)

Slant's second album contains 16 songs, which includes three short intermediate tracks. The sound can be described like a more grungier Eve To Adam. The singer in both bands sounds much alike. They put the downtuned riffs and songs in front and the quality is quite high through the record. There are a handful awesome tracks here, my favourites are "Lying And Bleeding", "Price To Pay" and the epic "Through My Own Steps". I think they have taken a great step forward compared to their first record, which was a bit uneven.

How often do you hear a group from Ukraine? Never in my case. When you listen and then discover that Mushmellow have made a record that sounds like a better version of Puddle Of Mudd, then you get even more excited. This record contains of 15 classy songs and it never gets boring. How often do you hear killertracks as no 14 and no 15 on a record?
